For years, Jocelyn Thorpe believed there was a single, correct blueprint for co-parenting after separation. She thought that if she and her ex-partner could not share a home, they had to at least share a perfectly synchronized parenting style, unified rules, and identical emotional responses. Anything less felt like failure.
But time and experience have taught her otherwise. In a personal reflection, Thorpe writes that she has finally learned that co-parenting does not require uniformity to be successful. The key, she discovered, is not in matching every decision or enforcing the same bedtime at both houses. Instead, it lies in a quieter, more resilient commitment: doing your best for the children, even when that best looks different from your co-parent's best.
Thorpe acknowledges that the path was not easy. There were disagreements, frustrations, and moments of doubt. Yet, she came to see that her children benefit from exposure to two distinct approaches to life. They learn flexibility, empathy, and the understanding that love can take many forms. The goal is not to erase the differences between parents but to manage them with respect and consistency where it matters most.
Her message is one of hard-won peace. "Our kids," she writes, "will continue to be co-parented by two people who, in our separate ways, always do our best for their sake." It is a reminder that good parenting, even when divided between two households, is still good parenting.
