A growing number of young adults are showing up to job interviews and career fairs with an unexpected companion: mom or dad. The trend, often called helicopter parenting in the workplace, is becoming more common as recent graduates face a tough labor market and high competition for entry-level roles.

Finance professor Dan Roccato notes that this is no longer a rare occurrence. He says employers are seeing more parents sit in on initial meetings, help fill out applications, and even negotiate salary offers. While some see this as a sign of overprotective parenting, others argue it is a practical response to a confusing job landscape.

Roccato points out that many young people today grew up with parents deeply involved in their schooling, activities, and even college applications. So it makes sense that this involvement would extend into the job hunt. But he also warns that it can backfire. Hiring managers may view a candidate as less independent or less ready to handle workplace challenges if they cannot speak for themselves.

Still, the trend is not all negative. Some parents are simply helping with logistics, like scheduling interviews or reviewing resumes. In a tight market, that extra support can make a difference. Roccato advises job seekers to let parents help behind the scenes but to step forward alone when it matters most. The key, he says, is showing confidence and self-reliance during the actual interview.
