A new survey comparing parents aged 18 to 45 has uncovered notable differences in how millennials and Gen Z raise their children. While both generations share some common ground, the data reveals that millennial parents are significantly more likely to engage in certain activities than their younger counterparts.
The report, which polled thousands of moms and dads across the age range, found that millennial parents are more inclined to prioritize structured extracurricular activities. They are more likely to enroll children in sports leagues, music lessons, and art classes by age five. Gen Z parents, by contrast, tend to favor free play and unstructured time at home.
Another area of divergence is screen time management. Millennial parents reported stricter limits on device use and were more likely to enforce "no phone zones" during meals and before bed. Gen Z parents, who grew up with smartphones and social media, showed greater leniency and often used screens as a tool for calming or entertaining children.
The survey also highlighted differences in financial habits. Millennial parents are more likely to set up savings accounts and college funds early, while Gen Z parents focus more on experiences like travel and dining out. millennial moms and dads reported higher rates of reading physical books to children, whereas Gen Z parents preferred audiobooks and digital storytelling apps.
Experts note that these patterns reflect each generation's unique upbringing and economic realities. Millennials came of age during the rise of helicopter parenting and the Great Recession, shaping their focus on planning and security. Gen Z, shaped by the pandemic and digital saturation, values flexibility and emotional authenticity over rigid schedules.
The findings suggest that parenting styles continue to evolve, with each generation adapting to the world their children will inherit.
