The Pre-Parenting Checklist

June 30, 2026 - 15:50

The Pre-Parenting Checklist

A new study suggests that money might not be the top concern for couples planning to start a family, despite common assumptions. Researchers found that emotional readiness and relationship stability often rank higher than financial security on the pre-parenting checklist.

The survey, conducted across multiple demographics, asked participants to rank factors influencing their decision to have children. While financial stability was cited as important, it consistently fell behind items like "feeling emotionally prepared" and "having a supportive partner." Only about 30% of respondents listed savings or income as their primary consideration.

Experts note that this challenges the narrative that millennials and Gen Z are delaying parenthood solely due to economic pressures. "People often assume the biggest barrier is money, but our data shows that emotional maturity and mutual commitment are the real gatekeepers," said one lead researcher. The study also found that couples who prioritized emotional readiness reported higher satisfaction in the first year of parenting, regardless of their income bracket.

Of course, finances still play a role. The research acknowledged that unexpected costs, like medical bills or reduced work hours, can create stress. But the takeaway is clear: a healthy relationship and personal readiness may matter more than a perfect bank account when deciding to expand a family.
