One mother shares how hormonal changes during perimenopause turned her into someone she barely knew, and how getting the right diagnosis changed everything.
For years, Sarah had prided herself on being a patient, calm parent. She could handle tantrums, sibling fights, and teenage eye rolls without losing her cool. But around age 44, something shifted. The smallest things set her off. A spilled glass of milk would send her into a rage that left her shaking. She would scream at her kids over messy rooms, then cry in the bathroom afterward, ashamed and confused.
"I thought I was just failing as a mother," she says. "I tried meditation, therapy, even anger management classes. Nothing worked."
The breaking point came during a family dinner. Her 10-year-old asked for the third time to be excused, and Sarah snapped. She slammed her hand on the table, startling everyone into silence. Her husband looked at her like she was a stranger.
That night, she started researching. She had noticed other changes too: night sweats, irregular periods, brain fog. A visit to her gynecologist confirmed what she had begun to suspect. She was in perimenopause, the transitional phase before menopause that can start years earlier than most women expect.
Hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause can dramatically affect mood regulation, particularly levels of estrogen and progesterone. For some women, this manifests as irritability, anxiety, or explosive anger. Sarah's doctor explained that her brain chemistry was essentially being rewired by shifting hormones, and her usual coping mechanisms were no longer enough.
Treatment included hormone therapy and lifestyle adjustments. Within months, Sarah felt like herself again. She still gets frustrated with her kids, but the volcanic rage is gone.
"I wish I had known sooner," she says. "I spent years thinking I was a bad mom when really, my body was going through a major transition. No one talks about how perimenopause can change your personality."
