Sensitive parenting buffers against child ADHD risks from pregnancy

Researchers at Oregon Health and Science University's Center for Mental Health Innovation have found that sensitive, responsive caregiving in early childhood may shield kids from the harmful effects of inflammation during pregnancy. That inflammation has been tied to a higher chance of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, symptoms later on.

The study looked at how mothers interacted with their toddlers during play and daily routines. When mothers were warm, attentive, and consistent in their responses, children whose mothers had high inflammation during pregnancy showed fewer ADHD symptoms by age four. In contrast, kids exposed to pregnancy inflammation but who received less sensitive care showed more noticeable attention and hyperactivity problems.

Inflammation during pregnancy can come from many sources, including infections, stress, poor diet, or obesity. The body's immune response releases chemicals that can reach the developing fetal brain and disrupt its growth. This is not about blaming mothers, the researchers stress. Many factors are outside a person's control. But the findings point to a practical way to help.
