Preparing for a baby is an exciting journey, but it also comes with a long to-do list. One of the most important tasks? Babyproofing your home. While your little one won’t be on the move immediately, it’s wise to tackle this task during pregnancy. Why? Because once your baby arrives, time and energy will be in short supply!
Think of babyproofing as creating a safe little bubble—one where your tiny adventurer can explore without running into trouble. So, let’s dive into the must-dos for making your home baby-safe before your little bundle arrives!
By addressing safety concerns early, you're giving yourself peace of mind. And let’s be honest, bending and lifting heavy things aren’t exactly pregnancy-friendly activities. Knock out the hard work now so you can focus on cuddles later.
- Crib Safety: Choose a crib that meets modern safety standards—no drop sides, wide gaps, or excessive bedding. A firm mattress with a fitted sheet is all your baby needs.
- Furniture Anchoring: Once your baby starts pulling up, dressers and shelves become climbing hazards. Secure furniture to the walls to prevent tipping.
- Cord Management: Pull cords from blinds or curtains pose a strangulation risk. Either remove them or invest in cordless alternatives.
- Cover Sharp Edges: Coffee tables, TV stands, and other sharp furniture corners need soft padding to prevent bumps and bruises.
- Mount the TV: Babies love to climb, and unmounted TVs can easily topple over. Secure it to the wall!
- Manage Cords: Power strips, phone chargers, and lamp cords should be tucked away or covered—little hands love to pull!
- Cabinet Locks: Babies love opening cabinets—install safety latches on lower cabinets, especially ones that store cleaning supplies.
- Secure Appliances: Use stove knob covers, keep hot pots on back burners, and install an oven lock to prevent curious fingers from getting burned.
- Trash Can Security: Babies are little explorers, and the trash can is full of “treasures.” Use a lidded or locking trash can to keep them out.
- Lock Away Chemicals: Store cleaning supplies, medicines, and toiletries out of reach in locked cabinets.
- Non-Slip Mats: Babies are wobbly, and a slippery tub can lead to falls. Use non-slip mats inside and outside the tub.
- Toilet Lock: Babies love water (and splashing!), so a toilet lock prevents unnecessary messes and drowning risks.
- Install Baby Gates: Use sturdy baby gates at the top and bottom of staircases to prevent falls.
- Banisters and Railings: If gaps between railings are wide enough for a baby’s head or body to squeeze through, install a banister guard.

So, grab your checklist, enlist some help, and start babyproofing. Your future self (and your little explorer) will thank you!
