Unicef recently ranked the Netherlands as the top country for child wellbeing, and as a father raising a daughter in Amsterdam, I can see why. The report, which looked at mental health, physical health, and social skills among children in wealthy nations, placed Dutch kids at the very top. It is not a fluke. It is the result of a culture that prioritizes balance over pressure.
The first thing you notice is the lack of constant competition. Schools do not pile on homework for young children. My daughter comes home at 3 p.m. with time to play outside, ride her bike, or just be a kid. There is no relentless push for advanced math or reading before age seven. Instead, the focus is on social development and independence. Children walk or cycle to school alone from a young age, which builds confidence.
Parents also have a different mindset. There is less hovering. We do not schedule every minute with structured activities. The Dutch value "gezelligheid" -- a cozy, relaxed togetherness. Dinner is eaten as a family, often early, and screens are put away. This simple routine creates a sense of security.
Of course, no country is perfect. There are issues with housing shortages and integration for immigrant families. But on the whole, the Dutch approach is a quiet rebellion against the anxiety-driven parenting seen elsewhere. They let children breathe. And that, more than any policy, is why they smile the most.
