Why this picture of my son haunts me as a single mum

Why this picture of my son haunts me as a single mum

Standing on top of Coronet Peak recently, watching my ten-year-old son disappear into the deepest snow he'd ever seen, I realised something I'd never quite been able to put into words. The photo I took that day, of his small figure dropping into a vast white bowl, has stayed with me in a way that surprises me. It is not a dramatic shot. No action, no face, just a small dark shape against an endless slope. But that image is exactly what haunts me.

As a single mum, I carry the weight of every decision alone. That moment on the mountain was the first time I had taken him on a real ski trip without his father. I had planned for months, saved for the lift passes, and worried about the gear. When he pushed off and vanished over the first roll, I felt a rush of pride and terror at the same time. He was not just skiing. He was leaving me behind, just for a few seconds, but it felt like a preview of everything to come.

The picture is not about the snow or the view. It is about trust. I had to let go, even though every instinct told me to grab his jacket and pull him back. He came up grinning, covered in powder, and asked to go again. That is when I understood: the haunting part is not the fear of losing him. It is the joy of watching him become his own person, and knowing that my job is to stand at the top and let him go, again and again.
